This article describes various approaches to stabilizing the subgrade of a roadway before the base is laid down. The author provides examples from various parts of the country: a geotechnical engineer with the Kansas Department of Transportation says his agency uses lime for heavy clays, Type C fly ash for silty soils, and Portland cement for sandy soil, as well as the agglomerates that are formed in the chemical reaction of soil and lime, fly ash, or cement. The author describes bound and unbound aggregate bases and their attributes, the rationale for using shot rock, and the Canadian method of roller-compacted concrete. In addition, the article includes an accompanying article on the construction of the Bristol Motor Speedway track in Bristol, Tennessee. Project challenges included paving transitions from the gently sloping straight-aways to the steeply-sloped turns.
