Abstract
Summary The present paper is a short review of research on the pine wood nematode in Russia. Beginning in the late 1980s, coniferous forests in different regions of European and Asian Russia were surveyed for pine wood nematode infections. Only populations of the nematode Bursaphelenchus mucronatus were detected. Thirteen populations of B. xylophilus, B. mucronatus, B. kolymensis and B. fraudulentus from Canada, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Russia and the United States were studied for morphological comparisons. Drawings of female tails, bursa, spicules and mucro are shown. Cross-hybridisation among Russian and French isolates of B. mucronatus and the Canadian isolate of B. xylophilus were conducted and hybrids were produced. Several pathogenicity tests using different isolates of B. mucronatus have been conducted in the Russian Far East and European part of Russia. Bursaphelenchus mucronatus was pathogenic to conifer species in some tests.
