Abstract
At this stage in our inquiry, no variation in any fundamental parameter has been confirmed, so modern physics has no need to feel threatened. On the contrary, its bases and principles seem to be reinforced by what we have seen in the course of our inquiry. Yet the doubts still linger, and there is a vague sense of disappointment in the air. It seems that, in the final analysis, we almost want there to be such a variation. Physicists, and especially the theoretical kind, seek out the slightest drift of a constant, not in dread but in hope. What are they hoping for? Why do modern theoretical physicists feel unfulfilled?
