Abstract

A variety of multimodal menu outputs were examined in a real driving situation with respect to efficient system interaction and aspects of safety. An electronic manual served as an exemplary application. The system has been designed with the prime intention of supporting the driver in interacting orally with the system. It proved expedient to display the menu after the spoken output had ended. Metainformation may possibly need to be presented in the acoustic mode and the amount of information required kept to a minimum as otherwise drivers become distracted and their driving behavior is negatively impacted. Conveying the actual states of the system is still relevant for each individual component.
