Abstract
La epoca en que los europeos podian dar forma al multilateralismo ha terminado. El G-20 ha mostrado ser una organizacion discola con la UE, que se ha visto presionada para sustituir al eurocentrico G-8 y revisar su posicion en el Fondo Monetario Internacional. El 9 de octubre, la canciller alemana, Angela Merkel, y el presidente frances, Nicolas Sarkozy, anunciaban que estaban trabajando en un plan para fortalecer los bancos de Europa y poner fin a la falta de confianza de los mercados financieros en la zona euro. Su meta era completarlo antes de la cumbre del G-20 en Cannes el 3-4 de noviembre. Sarkozy declaraba que los europeos deben �llegar al G-20 unidos y con los problemas resueltos�. Los dirigentes de la zona euro han estado sometidos a la presion internacional para que se organizaran antes de acudir a Cannes. El ministro de Hacienda britanico, George Osborne, habia calificado la reunion del G-20 de �claro plazo tope� para el eurogrupo. Otros miembros del G-20, desde Canada hasta Indonesia, habian manifestado publicamente su preocupacion respecto a la zona euro. A Merkel y Sarkozy, la idea de poner rumbo a Cannes con las manos vacias debe de haberles parecido demasiado humillante para plantearsela.
