The use of phosphoric acid modification of neat Polymer Modified Asphalt (PMA) binders has been brought into question. This study looks at two aggregates and four binders with and without lime to investigate acid modified binder compatibility issues. Two of the binders are modified with acid. The study looks at Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) mix types tested in the Hamburg Wheel Tracker to check mixture properties. In conclusion phosphoric acid appears to harm the durability protection of hydrated lime by creating compatibility issues with the materials, although the data is not conclusive. All four binders looked similar in the binder lab, when checked for specification compliance. However, they performed very differently in the Hamburg test. Additional cure time appears to make the Hamburg slabs more durable and rut less. Lime modification increases the mixture durability but in some cases not significantly. This is possibly due to acid in the binder. It is recommended to check HMA with some kind of performance test. Exact procedures must be followed when performing the Hamburg test. Additional research is recommended where the acid types are known along with the base binders and polymers. Cure time for sample preparation should also be evaluated.
