Abstract
ReCENTLY the seven most industrialised nations—the USA, Canada, Japan, the UK, France, West Germany, and Italy—met in their yearly summit which had been introduced nine years ago. The first summit took place in Rambouillet in France at the behest of the French President, Giscard d'Estaing, in 1975. This yearly get-together is more than a social gathering of the seven big nations of the world. It is a ritual that reaffirms their togetherness. To the world they seem, on such occasions, united, especially in tackling problems that they, the rich and industrialised, and the developing world are facing today. Though they pledged to work for the good of the poor and developing countries of the world, their main interest was first to put their own houses in order. The big seven had last met in Williamsburg; and since then there have been changes in the world arena. In Lancaster House in London this June, it was time to take stock.
