Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

cost me a lot of trouble and money to get from Moscow to Tolstoy's home, Yasnaya Polyana. This is a countryside estate 130 miles south of Moscow (near Tula). Although public transport is cheap in Russia, there are government regulations to complicate journeys, and to ignore them would be dangerous. You need a special visa to stay the night near Tula. Indeed, even if you make the trip in a day, you need such a visa, which can be procured easily and quickly only through the good graces of Intourist (the state travel agency). Moreover, if you go on your own, you risk arriving too late to see anything. For me, the only practical way to go was to accept Intourisťs terms in a shiny black car with a chauffeur and a personal guide, like minor royalty. Would the trip be worth it? (It cost 100 rubles, 150 dollars.) Would it be a Tolstoyan thing to do? Nineteen seventy-eight was the 150th anniversary of Tolstoy's birth, and his admirers all over the world celebrated it. I had heard of scholarly meetings in Warsaw, in Vancouver, some observance organized by UNESCO, and no doubt there have been more. Of these, Tolstoy would almost certainly disapprove, and his disapproval would be more than the crankiness of the standard celebrity. By and large, Tolstoy scholars are celebrating the author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina, while Tolstoy repudiated both those novels long before his death. For the last thirty years of his life he was a moral prophet and religious teacher, and what he bequeathed to the world were not works of art but a doctrine of peace and simplification, of diminishment the diminishment of appetite, personal and social. He, with Gandhi, is the true father and hidden hero of alternative ways of life. The true celebration of his work last year is not to be found at any of the Tolstoy symposia, but at the occupation of the nuclear power plants at Seabrook and elsewhere. But if the student of Tolstoy ought to go to Seabrook, the teacher of Tolstoy may be allowed a visit to Yasnaya Polyana. To teach Tolstoy demands a study in the theatrical sense one must to some degree become Tolstoy and his family home is a central part of what one studies. It is the surviving part of his physical presence. The house and grounds were important to his married life and to hiy work as a writer -

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
