Abstract
Dix ans après sa mort, Frank Zappa reste une énigme et une somme de contraires peu communes. Connu des adolescents pour sa musique rock dont les thèmes oscillent entre le grivois et l’obscène, il est aussi respecté pour sa critique sociale féroce et ses oeuvres de musique « sérieuse » auxquelles, par ailleurs, un parfum de scandale aura toujours fait de l’ombre. Sa célébrité de rock star a malheureusement pris le pas, à travers la lorgnette de médias à courte vue, sur toutes les autres facettes de son oeuvre multiforme. L’auteur retrace ici le parcours biographique de Zappa en s’attachant principalement à ses expériences dans le vaste domaine des musiques « sérieuses » et rappelle que, de la découverte de la musique de Varèse à sa rencontre avec l’Ensemble Modern, le chemin de Zappa ne croise pas par hasard ceux de Zubin Mehta, Pierre Boulez et Kent Nagano.
