The cultural and social benefits of cultural quarters: the case of Temple Bar, Dublin

Abstract
This study investigated the use of cultural quarters as a regeneration tool, focusing on social and cultural impacts on the local population. As one of the longest established cultural quarters in Europe, the Temple Bar Cultural Quarter was used as a case study. Previously, much of the research into cultural regeneration has focused on economic and environmental factors. There is a lack of empirical evidence associated with the social and cultural impacts of cultural regeneration. Cultural impacts, in particular, have only begun to receive attention recently. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was used to assess the current social and cultural impacts of Temple Bar on the local population. Fifty people responded to a quantitative questionnaire and five of those took part in semi-structured interviews. The results show that Temple Bar has achieved strong social and cultural impacts for a small proportion of the population. The extent of these impacts has not reached the whole population, with the majority of the population experiencing limited social and cultural benefits.
