Le pillage des œuvres d’art et objets mobiliers subi durant la Grande Guerre dans les régions envahies et occupées a contribué à la création après guerre d’organismes administratifs spécifiques et complexes ayant pour vocation de rendre effective la récupération des objets par leurs propriétaires légitimes ; les documents générés par un de ces organismes, le Séquestre général des biens restitués par les Allemands, dont l’activité s’est étendue jusqu’au milieu des années vingt, conservés dans la sous-série AJ/28 [Dommages de la Première Guerre mondiale] des Archives nationales, éclairent certains aspects méconnus de cette conséquence de la guerre.
