Abstract
This essay explores the 1865 founding and subsequent early operation of the Russian Society for the Protection of Animals (Rossiiskoe obshchestvo pokrovitel'stva zhivotnym or ROPZh). It provides an overview of early organization, operations, personnel, and goals. Particular emphasis is given to the ROPZh's place within multiple social and intellectual contexts, including the contemporary international movement in favor of animal welfare, the 1861 Emancipation of the Russian peasantry and other Great Reforms carried out by Tsar Alexander II, ongoing Westernization, and the emergence of voluntary associations, public opinion, and civic engagement in late Imperial Russia.
