Abstract

This article analyzes the situation of seasonal and occasional farm workers in Quebec, consisting mostly of recent immigrants under precarious status, such as refugees. It questions whether this farm work creates a global influence as to integration to Quebec society. Is it a factor of inclusion or exclusion? A ghetto for immigrant workers? Based upon the findings of social research on the working conditions and the professional insertion of those workers, this article examines the characteristics of occasional farm work as well as the reasons behind this choice of work and various insertion strategies referred to by salaried farm employees. It also explores the relations between farmers and those workers, concentrating on hiring and managing policies where discriminatory behaviour may be observed. A form of exclusion then emerges, caused particularly by unequal relations between majority and minority participants. This situation recalls the one described by the International Labour Office of the United Nati ons, where farm workers of the world are referred to as the poorest among the poor. …

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
