Abstract
Cet article questionne l’historiographie concernant la République brésilienne dans la perspective d’une réinterprétation qui tienne compte de l’imaginaire national caractérisé ici comme métis ou « noir ». Mon but est de chercher les racines d’une identité nationale dont le noyau réside dans le mélange interracial ou dans la recréation d’identités post-africaines que j’oppose à la manière dont le colonisateur européen a pensé le Brésil comme expansion de sa culture et de sa race dans le Nouveau Monde. Je défends la thèse selon laquelle la formation nationale a fini par réduire les idéaux de liberté à l’abolition de l’esclavage, a restreint l’égalité aux limites des classes sociales et a fait de la fraternité entre les races le seul terrain de solidarité sociale.
