Abstract
The views of the Russian educator and researcher L. N. Modzalevskiy upon the history of public education in Russia up to the first quarter of the 17th century have been highlighted. The scholars thoughts on the positive impact of the adoption of Christianity upon the state of upbringing and education in Russia, on the negative consequences of the Tatar yoke for the general level of education of ancient Russia, on the role of scholasticism in the development of the global philosophical conception on the whole and the Russian school in particular have been analysed. Based on the analysis of L. N. Modzalevskiys works a conclusion is made on the of necessity of continuity in Russian pedagogical tradition.
