Cette thèse a pour objet l'étude de l'évolution et de la dynamique sédimentaire de mares de
\nthermokarst au Québec subarctique. Le site d'étude, situé près de Kuujjuarapik-Whapmagoostui
\nen zone de pergélisol discontinu, renferme plusieurs mares de thermokarst
\nayant des propriétés limnologiques contrastées (exprimées notamment par la couleur). La
\nrecherche comporte trois axes méthodologiques: 1) lithostratigraphie et chronologie de
\nsédiments de mares de thermokarst à l'aide d'analyses sédimentologiques, géochimiques et
\nradiochronologiques; 2) biostratigraphie et reconstructions paléolimnologiques à l'aide de
\nl'analyse des diatomées fossiles et des propriétés spectrales des sédiments; 3) dynamique
\ngéomorphologique et sédimentaire récente des mares par télédétection et piégeage des
\nsédiments.
\nLes analyses lithostratigraphiques et biostratigraphiques, jumelées aux résultats des datations,
\nont révélé la présence de trois faciès sédimentaires distincts, généralement les mêmes d'une
\nmare à l'autre: 1) un faciès inférieur (LF, "Iower facies") d'origine marine postglaciaire
\n(~ 7900 cal. a BP), subséquemment affecté par le développement du pergélisol; 2) une zone
\nde transition organique/tourbeuse (TZ, "transition zone"), représentant les vestiges d'anciens
\nsommets tourbeux des buttes de pergélisol; 3) un faciès supérieur lacustre (UF, "upper facies"),
\ndéposé depuis la fonte de ces buttes « 200 cal. a BP) et l'affaissement de la surface du sol qui
\nen a résulté. L'analyse des diatomées a montré l'influence majeure de la présence de couches
\nde tourbe (TZ) lors du développement initial des mares sur, d'une part les premiers
\nassemblages d'espèces de diatomées (majoritairement benthiques et bryophiles), et d'autre
\npart la source interne (in situ) de carbone organique dissous (COD), qui a progressivement
\ndiminué lors du développement des mares suite à son adsorption par les silts et argiles en
\nsuspension dans la colonne d'eau. Par ailleurs, il est démontré que la quasi-disparition (> 95 %)
\ndu pergélisol au cours des cinquante dernières années n'a pas été compensée par un
\ndéveloppement équivalent des mares de thermokarst, mais plutôt par l'augmentation
\nremarquable (> 300 %) du couvert de végétation. Enfin, l'influence directe de la stratification
\nthermique/oxygénique de la colonne d'eau sur la sédimentologie des mares a été démontrée en
\nétudiant les contrastes géochimiques entre l'épilimnion et l'hypolimnion.
\n<br /><br />The research topic of this thesis is the evolution and sedimentological dynamics of thermokarst
\nponds in subarctic Québec. The study site, located near Kuujjuarapik-Whapmagoostui in the
\ndiscontinuous permafrost zone, contains many thermokarst ponds showing contrasting
\nlimnological properties (including color). The research methodology is based on a threefold
\napproach: 1) lithostratigraphy and chronology of thermokarst pond sediments by
\nsedimentological, geochemical and chronological analyses; 2) biostratigraphy and
\npaleolimnological reconstructions by fossil diatom analysis and spectral properties of these
\nsediments; 3) recent geomorphological and sedimentological dynamics of the ponds by remote
\nsensing and sediment trap techniques.
\nLithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic analyses, in conjunction with dating results, revealed the
\noccurrence of three distinct sedimentary facies broadly identical among ponds: 1) a lower facies
\n(LF) of postglacial marine origin (~ 7 900 cal. a BP), subsequently atfected by permafrost
\ninception and growth; 2) a peatlorganic transition zone (TZ), representing former peaty surfaces
\nof permafrost mounds; 3) an upper lacustrine facies (UF), deposited since the thawing of these
\nmounds « 200 cal. a BP) and the resulting subsidence of the ground surface. Diatom analysis
\nshowed the major impact of peat layers (TZ) during initial pond development stages, both by
\nstrongly controlling diatom species assemblages (mostly benthic and bryophilous life forms) and
\nby providing an internai (in situ) source of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which progressively
\ndecreased during pond development as it was adsorbed onto settling silts and clays in the water
\ncolumn. Moreover, it was shown that the strong decrease (> 95 %) in permafrost extent was not
\nprimarily compensated by thermokarst pond development, but rather by a remarkable increase
\n(> 300 %) in vegetation cover. Finally, the direct influence of thermal/oxigenic stratification of the
\nwater column on pond sedimentology was demonstrated by investigating the geochemical
\ncontrasts between the epilimnion and the hypolimnion.
