On June 26, 1999, during an arthropod survey at Konza Prairie Biological Station in Riley County, Kansas, a red long-horned beetle was taken on common milkweed, Asclepias syriaca Linnaeus. The beetle appeared at first glance to be the common and widespread Tetraopes tetrophthalmus (Forster). Several weeks later, on July 17, 1999, another specimen was taken at the same location, just west of the historical Hokanson Homestead, again on A. syriaca. According to Chemsak (1963) the genus Tetraopes Schoenherr contains 22 species. Thirteen of these occur in the United States and southern Canada. Bionomics of the genus are not well known, but each species of Tetraopes appears to be limited to one or a few species of the milkweed genus Asclepias. Adults (both sexes) congregate on their host plants to feed and mate. Both foliage and blossoms are eaten. Larvae are known for only a few species, and these appear to feed in the Asclepias roots. Tetraopes texanus G. Horn is immediately separable from the other six congeners that occur in Kansas (T. dis coideus LeConte, T. annulatus LeConte, T. pilosus Chemsak, T. tetrophthalmus (Forster), T. quinquemaculatus Haldeman and T. femoratus LeConte) by the distinctive shape of the eleventh (distal) antennomere and the fringes of very long setae at the apices of the antennomeres. The distal antennomere is unique in that it abruptly tapers at the middle and then very narrowly extends apically. This feature will also separate T. texanus from a seventh con gener, T. mandibularis Chemsak, if that species should eventually extend into Kansas from Oklahoma. No specimens from Kansas were found in the collection of the Museum of Entomological and Prairie Arthro pod Research, Department of Entomology, Kansas State University, Manhattan, or in the Snow Entomological Collection, Division of Entomology, University of Kansas Natural History Museum in Lawrence, Kansas. Chem sak (1963) gave only Texas and Oklahoma records. Rice (1988) did not collect this species in Kansas and Knull (1946) did not list the species for Ohio. MacRae (1993) gave records for three counties in southern Missouri, all associated with A. viridiflora Rafinesque. Yanega (1996) gave the distribution of T. texanus as southcentral U.S. whose range extends into Missouri. Based on these references, the Konza Prairie specimens are the first records for Kansas and a new host association. Voucher specimens are located at the Hulbert Research Center, Konza Prairie Biological Station, Manhattan, Kansas.
