A pesar de que el estudio de la microbiologia y la inmunologia es imprescindible para comprender la patogenia de las infecciones por hongos, parasitos, bacterias, virus y otros microorganismos, esta epidemia ha sido posible gracias a una combinacion de conductas humanas y respuestas a cambios ambientales. La ecologia social de las infecciones se ocupa del estudio de las interacciones entre el microorganismo y el anfitrion; esta especialidad pretende comprender y describir los mecanismos de modificacion de microambientes especificos como consecuencia de las actividades del ser humano con la ulterior creacion de condiciones favorables para la proliferacion y la diseminacion demicroorganismos conocidos o desconocidos. Aunque algunos posibles patogenos pueden adaptarse a nichos especificos en funcion de sus caracteristicas intrinsecas, como la capacidad de tolerar el calor, el frio o la desecacion, y su microentorno, los cambios del comportamiento humano son los que hacen posible sudispersion.Deestemodo, apesardequeYersiniapestisproduciacasosaisladosde muerte en algunas regiones remotas de Europa con anterioridad al siglo XIV, la aparicion del comercio globalizado en el Mediterraneo y el Mar Muerto hizo posible el transporte de este microorganismo a traves de ratas en los barcos y la famosa Muerte Negra, que mato a 20 a 30 millones de europeos o, aproximadamente, a una a dos terceras partes de la poblacion. Los cambios sociales que trajo consigo la PrimeraGuerraMundial, durante la cual numerosos soldados convivieron en condiciones de hacinamiento en los frentes y posteriormente portaron enfermedades infecciosas desde alli hacia sus lugares de origen, y viceversa, favorecieron la epidemia de la gripe espanola que tuvo lugar entre 1918 y 1919. Asimismo, la desnutricion, el desplazamiento de millones de personas y las condiciones infrahumanas de subsistencia potenciaron aun mas la diseminacion del virus. En solo unos anos, este virus se disperso en todo el planeta en tres epidemias sucesivas que provocaron la muerte a unos 50 millones de personas.
