L'ataxie récessive-spastique de Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSCS) est une maladie neurodégénérative héréditaire localisée presque exclusivement au Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean et à Charlevoix. Elle entraîne principalement des troubles moteurs, notamment un déficit de la coordination. Au point de vue cognitif, l'étude de Bouchard (1978) a révélé que les individus atteints d'ARSCS possèdent une intelligence normale. Au cours des dix dernières années, les observations et les évaluations neuropsychologiques des intervenants du Centre hospitalier de la Sagamie révèlent la possibilité de déficit visuoperceptif, attentionnel et des troubles de planification. Dernièrement, Drolet, Dion & Mathieu (2002) ont confirmé la présence d'un déficit sur le plan attentionnel sans présence d'un déficit visuoperceptif ou d'un trouble de planification. Pourtant, la moitié des jeunes atteints par cette maladie éprouvent des difficultés d'apprentissage scolaire. La présente étude s'est intéressée aux aspects affectifs, tels l'anxiété et l'estime de soi des jeunes atteints de l'ARSCS, afin de tenter d'expliquer les difficultés observées dans les apprentissages en milieu scolaire. Les résultats de l'étude ne permettent pas d'établir un profil affectif homogène qui pourrait expliquer ces difficultés. Cependant, l'étude démontre que le niveau d'anxiété chez les participants ARSCS avec difficulté d'apprentissage scolaire (ARSCS/ADAS) est plus élevé que chez ceux sans difficulté (ARSCS/SDAS). Enfin, l'analyse permet d'établir que les jeunes ARSCS/ADAS démontrent un désir d'acceptabilité sociale élevé comparativement aux jeunes ARSCS/SDAS.
