Depuis les années soixante, l'institutionnalisation et la médicalisation de la mort ont modifié ce phénomène dans le sens d'une prolongation significative de la vie. Non seulement la mort est-elle réversible grâce à la réanimation cardiorespiratoire, mais encore les transplantations d'organes modifient le cours de maladies autrefois jugées terminales. Sous la poussée d'un impératif technologique évident, les conditions de fin de vie ont été modifiées dans le sens d'un plus grand interventionnisme. Mais, plus encore, les développements technologiques ont conduit à l'élaboration de nouveaux critères de détermination de la mort qui, à leur tour, ont suscité des reconceptualisations de ce phénomène et des normes régissant les pratiques en ce domaine. Considérant les risques inhérents à une normativité scientifique qui s'imposerait comme un absolu, des comités d'éthique ont été formés dans le but de poser des balises au développement scientifique et technologique. Ces comités proposent une normativité éthique, sous la forme de lignes directrices. Dans cette démarche, les règles morales traditionnelles sont complétées par des normes consensuelles interdisciplinaires qui se présentent comme des guides dans la solution des problèmes éthiques nés de l'avancement scientifique. Ainsi, s'installe une éthique sociale de type procédural qui, pour être efficace, doit pouvoir compter sur de bonnes dispositions morales de la part des différents intervenants.
