Les grandes régions métropolitaines canadiennes sont souvent qualifiées d'espaces cosmopolites, concentrant une part importante d'individus issus de l'immigration. C'est le cas, entre autres, de la région métropolitaine de Montréal - la deuxième plus populeuse métropole canadienne -, où près d'une personne sur cinq est née à l'extérieur du Canada. Les immigrants ne forment pas un groupe monolithique et, en fonction de certaines de leurs caractéristiques (pays d'origine, langue maternelle, religion, etc.), ils se localisent différemment dans l'espace métropolitain; alors que certain groupes se dispersent sur une grande partie du territoire, d'autres tendent à se regrouper et à élire domicile dans des quartiers où se concentrent d'autres immigrants possédant des caractéristiques similaires. Par conséquent le but premier de cet atlas est de dresser le portrait de la distribution spatiale des immigrants dans l'espace métropolitain selon la période d'immigration, la région et le pays de naissance, la langue maternelle, l'origine ethnique, la minorité visible et l'appartenance religieuse.
