La reconnaissance de l'agriculture urbaine (AU) comme activité productive démarra de façon très fragmentée: un chercheur intéressé ici, un projet de développement là. C'est vraiment à partir de 1990 que cette reconnaissance s'est étendue, grâce à l'émergence rapide d'un maillage plus cohérent à différentes échelles. C'est cette transformation, y compris divers efforts de mise en réseau (certains plus aboutis que d'autres) que cet article dépeint. Le processus de mise en place de deux centres de ressources et têtes de réseaux (UAN et RUAF) est décrit d'abord, ainsi que le rôle important de soutien du CRDI canadien et du gouvernement hollandais. Ensuite, trois exemples de réseaux sont donnés: en Amérique latine et Caraïbe, dont le réseau AGUILA a été le premier à apparaître comme tel; en Asie du sud est, où le réseau est une des composantes d'un projet axé sur l'approvisionnement des villes; enfin au Moyen Orient et en Afrique du Nord, où le réseau passe actuellement à l'état émergent, avec une phase d'incubation.
