Tres temas son analizados en este artículo: las infancias musicales, la educación musical para la conversión religiosa y la música en las escuelas en el Reino Unido entre 1970 y 2004. Estos temas se relacionan luego con tres cuestiones relativas a la investigación histórica en educación musical: que la investigación ha de ser sensible a los contextos sociales, históricos, ideológicos y culturales en los que la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de la música tienen lugar; que ha de prestarse una atención adecuada a la enseñanza y el aprendizaje reales de la música; y que la educación musical ha de ser vista esencialmente como un área amplia de actividad que incluye contextos tanto formales como informales. Se reúnen ejemplos de varias épocas y culturas, desde el medioevo hasta la actualidad, desde el Reino Unido hasta Sudamérica y la costa de El Labrador en Canadá. Un tema secundario se refiere a algunas de las formas en las que los historiadores de la educación realizan su trabajo, en particular la investigación archivística. Las conclusiones presentadas se centran en una definición inclusiva de la educación musical, que abarca todos los esfuerzos deliberados de transmitir música de una generación a la otra.
