Les Belges du Canada en 1881 : la construction d’un recensement agrégé

Abstract
Les recensements canadiens constituent une source incontournable dans l’étude de l’histoire des mouvements migratoires au Canada. Cependant, leur utilisation est limitée par les données agrégées publiées : toutes les origines ne peuvent être répertoriées dans les compilations faisant l’objet de publications officielles. Ainsi, les immigrants belges sont répertoriés dans les recensements de 1901 et 1911, mais ni en 1881, ni en 1891. Dans le cadre d’une recherche historique longitudinale, pour saisir le mouvement d’immigration dans ses débuts, nous pouvons utiliser les microdonnées intégrales. C’est le cas pour le recensement de 1881, grâce auquel nous avons pu reconstituer les données agrégées en distinguant les immigrants belges de ceux des autres origines. On peut ainsi, pour la première fois, avoir une image du volume, de la répartition et des caractéristiques de l’immigration belge en 1881.
