Il fut un âge où les livres étaient manuscrits, où l’on tutoyait le candide lecteur en tête d’ouvrage et où les sommes de santé, de chimie, d’alchimie, de philologie ou de grammaire souvent s’écrivaient comme des conversations. Les titres de ces ouvrages de référence anciens et sans cesse repris, imités, continués invitaient à la promenade : viridarium (bosquet ou parc), silva (forêt), frutetum (verger), seminarium (pépinière), hortus (jardin) font défiler, en ouverture des textes, les paysages d’une promenade dans le savoir. « Jardins chymiques », « vergers de la santé », « pépinières de la science » évoquent ainsi sur les rayons des bibliothèques médiévales non pas les massifs bâtiments d’encyclopédies systématiques mais les déambulations des lecteurs et compilateurs par les chemins du savoir.
