Bien qu’il refuse l’engagement sartrien, Alain Robbe-Grillet, nouveau Prométhée, se donne, en minant les structures et les trames narratives, la fonction sociale de faire de son lecteur un homme nouveau, lui-même futur créateur d’un nouveau monde. Ainsi condamné à écrire indéfiniment à partir de fragments qui se dérobent et se combattent sans cesse, Robbe-Grillet s’inflige le châtiment réservé à Sisyphe, mais c’est finalement dans cette quête impossible que résident la liberté et, partant, la grandeur de l’écrivain.AbstractThough he denies Sartre’s commitment, by scuttling narrative structures and patterns, Alain Robbe-Grillet, like a new Prometheus, sets out to make his reader a new person, him/herself creator of a new world. Thus sentenced to indefinitely writing fragments that escape and fight each other constantly, Robbe-Grillet inflicts upon himself the punishment given to Sisyphus, but it is ultimately in this impossible quest that resides the freedom and, ultimately, the greatness of the writer.
