Abstract
Ce texte annonce un programme de recherche qui, en revisitant le discours sur la tempérance visant les Canadiens français du XIXesiècle, se propose d’explorer les premiers moments de l’avènement d’une subjectivité politique constituée dans les marges de l’Empire britannique. Les premières décennies qui ont suivi la conquête de l’Amérique du Nord ont été déterminantes pour l’instauration d’un mode de gouvernement qui a donné au clergé catholique une position de force. L’usage qu’il a fait du discours sur la tempérance en est clairement révélateur. Mais, au même moment, la lutte contre l’intempérance était aussi menée ailleurs, surtout par les Églises réformées. En suivant les ancrages et les modes d’interpellation propres à chaque contexte, on devrait pouvoir mieux comprendre comment des personnes sont objectivées, catégorisées, assignées à une individualité, en vue d’être gouvernées. Il s’agit donc de suivre un propos et des manières de faire, dans l’esprit des études coloniales et postcoloniales, en retenant que des rapports de pouvoir peuvent être « productifs ».
