Quelques mois avant l’introduction des itinéraires de découverte au collège, et au moment où un premier bilan permet, en ce qui concerne le lycée, de confronter les objectifs initiaux des TPE aux questions soulevées par leur mise en œuvre, la Revue internationale d’éducation de Sèvres a cherché à savoir ce qui se passe ailleurs. En Allemagne, on prévoit par exemple de favoriser au niveau fédéral l’autonomie des apprentissages grâce à une utilisation systématique des TICE. Aux Pays-Bas, l’autonomie de l’élève n’est plus un objectif mais une réalité inscrite depuis longtemps. On commence aujourd’hui à en mesurer les avantages et les inconvénients. Certains craignent, au Québec par exemple, que cette évolution vers une plus grande autonomie de l’élève n’entraîne le risque de substituer la construction des compétences à la transmission des savoirs. En Italie, plusieurs modèles pédagogiques cohabitent : doit-on y voir une richesse ou au contraire redouter une exacerbation de la compétition entre établissements ? Dans un pays comme l’Argentine, au contexte économique et social très hétérogène selon les régions, l’accès à un savoir plus complexe, selon des modalités plus autonomes, est plutôt fonction du milieu social des élèves et des ressources propres à chaque école.
