Abstract
Louis d’Ussieux écrivit deux recueils de nouvelles à la fin du xviii e siècle. Dans le choix de ses titres et dans un avertissement, il se réfère au modèle de Segrais autant qu’à celui de Boccace, mais il souligne surtout l’influence qu’a exercée sur lui Baculard d’Arnaud. En prenant pour exemple quatre nouvelles extraites du recueil des Nouvelles françaises , dont deux au moins sont presque des plagiats, on montrera comment l’influence du théâtre a fait évoluer le genre de la nouvelle donnée pour une « anecdote » : la disposition des dialogues, le choix des scènes devenues plus importantes que les passages narratifs, l’intérêt pour l’éloquence et les excès pathétiques demandent au lecteur d’assister à un véritable spectacle, conforme à l’esthétique du drame. Ce projet est confirmé par l’illustration qui détermine la lecture en choisissant des épisodes spectaculaires de nature à intéresser les « âmes sensibles ».
