Abstract
Cet article, fondé sur une enquête par entretiens réalisée en 1998 auprès de 25 jeunes d'une région industrielle de l'est de la France, vise à analyser le déclassement social déjeunes d'origine ouvrière qui ont suivi, souvent malgré eux, la vague de démocratisation scolaire des années 1985-1995. Différentes études de cas montrent à la fois leur incapacité à réussir des concours qui leur sont formellement accessibles, la manière dont ils se perçoivent comme des ouvriers de passage lorsqu'ils sont embauchés à l'usine, le redoublement du déclassement social par un déclassement dans la famille (les membres de la fratrie passés par le lycée professionnel peuvent avoir mieux réussi qu'eux) et le sentiment de dépréciation de soi lié à ce retour à l'usine qu'ils avaient voulu fuir par les études longues.
