Abstract
Unter den Aktivitäten im Bereich der Menschenrechte im Jahr 2006 stand die Schaffung des Menschenrechtsrats am 15. März 2006, in Ablösung der ehemaligen Menschenrechtskommission, im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Die Einsetzung dieses Gremiums weckte hohe Erwartungen : Die Herausforderungen betreffen hauptsächlich die Transition der Instrumente, die sich in der früheren Kommission bewährt haben, sowie die Anwendung neuer Mechanismen, besonders der regelmässigen universalen Überprüfung. Der Erfolg bzw. Misserfolg der Einsetzung des Menschenrechtsrats lässt sich frühestens im Juni 2007 beurteilen, wenn die Beschlüsse über die institutionelle Verankerung des neuen Gremiums gefällt werden. Doch wurden bereits bei der Abhaltung der zweiten Tagung erste Kritiken laut.Im Rahmen der Aids-Bekämpfung feierte das Programm der Vereinten Nationen gegen HIV/Aids (UNAIDS) sein zehnjähriges Bestehen. Anlässlich dieses Jahrestags wurde ein spezieller Bericht publiziert, der die Geschichte der Aids-Bekämpfung nachzeichnet. Die 16. Internationale Aids-Konferenz tagte vom 13. bis 18. August 2006 in Toronto. Die Weltgesundheitsversammlung hielt ihre 59. Tagung ab. Im Vordergrund standen dabei der weltweite Mangel an Gesundheitsfachkräften und die Prüfung der Empfehlungen der Kommission für geistige Eigentumsrechte, Innovation und Gesundheit. Die Internationale Arbeitskonferenz, die vom 31. Mai bis zum 16. Juni in Genf ihre 95. Tagung abhielt, verabschiedete ein Übereinkommen über den Arbeitsschutz sowie eine Empfehlung über das Arbeitsverhältnis.
