Abstract
Cet article concerne Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur (1757-1810), montréalais de naissance, vice-consul de France en Hongrie et dans le Levant, polygraphe et dessinateur. On s’intéresse ici à certaines de ses œuvres en montrant ce qu’elles doivent à l’époque et ce qu’elles introduisent aussi de nouveau dans l’espace éditorial du temps. Grasset ne se contente pas de suivre la mode : il témoigne aussi sur certains sujets d’une pensée d’avant-garde, qu’il s’agisse de sa perception des Noirs en Afrique, ou du roman libertin : Hortense, ou la Jolie Courtisane. Dans ce récit rocambolesque sur les mésaventures amoureuses d’une Européenne perdue aux Amériques avec le « nègre Zéphire », peut se lire toute une réflexion sur les mariages interraciaux. Le Blanc n’y impose pas toujours ses valeurs et l’acculturation, pour Grasset, s’effectue aussi bien dans les deux sens. Autant de découvertes qui nous invitent à mieux connaître cet auteur d’origine canadienne dont l’œuvre mériterait à coup sûr d’être rééditée et systématiquement analysée.
