Uniuersity York D.r* rextes de Claudel s'intitulent .. L-Enfant-J6sus de Prague ,,.Lun, le plus ancien, peut-Ctre 6crit en d6cembre 1910 e Prague, est un pobme de trente vers alexandrins d rime platel.IJautre, trois pages en prose, 6crit d Paris en mai 1938, parait dans le recueil Contacts et circonstartces2.Bien que leur genbse soit s6par6e de plusieurs ann6es et de grandes distances g6ographiques, les deux textes sont reli6s par une image religieuse, celle de la sta- tuette de I'Enfant J6sus de Prague, par la g6ographie et les traditions religieuses de la Bohbme et, enfin, par I'id6e de protec- tion contre les forces du Mal, -une lutte qui comporte des dimensions religieuses, culturelles et historiques.Les deux textes, d'ailleurs, s'apparentent par leur caractbre m6ditatif et leur inspira- tion li6e d des circonstances historiques.Enfin, les deux textes sont une expression concrbte de la foi de Claudei, de son christianisme catholique.Le pobme " LEnfant-J6sus de Prague " fait partie de la s6rie de quatre textes po6tiques que Claudel appelle " Images Saintes de Boh6me >>, tous 6crits au cours de son s6jour diplomatique h Prague de d6cembre 1909 d septembre 1911.Nomm6 d Prague, le Consul y arrive dans des conditions peu attrayantes.Le grand froid, la neige, les jours sombres et courts, < une horrible neige et dans des t6nbbres continuelles ", 6crit-i1 d Louis Massignon3, compiiquent et attristent la p6riode d'installation.Le sentiment de d6paysement et d'isolement est in6vitable.Il n'y sera jamais vraiment d son aise et, en quittant le pays deux ans plus tard, il d6signe Prague avec m6pris un " silo i betteraves " 4.
