Abstract
Depuis maintenant quarante ans, on explique l’appartenance de l’essai à la littérature par la combinaison d’un verbe et d’une pensée d’exception dont il serait le lieu. Il est ici envisagé autrement. Car le nom essai est celui du rapport entre une pratique d’écriture et de pensée et la modalité interprétative qui lui donne une visibilité et une lisibilité tenant à la conception spécifique de la pensée, de l’écriture et de la lecture remontant aux romantiques allemands. Cet article examine en trois étapes les grands pans de cette intelligibilité littéraire au sein de la pensée québécoise de l’essai, chez les plus grands écrivains associés au genre, dont Pierre Vadeboncoeur, André Belleau et Fernand Ouellette.
