Après avoir longuement défini Société, Vieillissement, Personne âgée, l'auteur évoque la dévalorisation des vieux liée vraisemblablement au statut de dépendance et d'oisiveté pensionnée que leur assigne la société industrielle. Deux fonctions pourtant demeurent leur vocation eminente: l'humanisation des enfants, la réorientation de l'histoire commune à travers la réinterprétation de leur vie. Méconnues ou inhibées, l'exercice de ces fonctions reste essentiel au bien vieillir des individus et leur reconnaissance se révèle aujourd'hui indispensable à la survie même de notre espèce: devenue capable de se détruire elle-même, l'humanité ne peut plus considérer comme un luxe inutile la sagesse réglant le bon usage de son savoir et de son pouvoir accrus. L'âge ne confère pas la sagesse; mais on ne la trouve pas sans lui. Regardons le foisonnement des vieux autour de nous non comme un fardeau, mais comme la planche de notre salut.
