This paper presents a nonlinear finite element (FE) study to predict the tensile behaviour of the selected gusset-plate welded connections in VHS tubes with short weld lengths. Three FE models based on the tested specimens were developed to simulate the block shear tear out (TO) failure. As heat-affected-zone (HAZ) softening has a significant effect on welded VHS tubes, the measured HAZ property was used in the models. A nonlinear plasticity analysis based on the 'death feature' criteria was used to predict the failure (maximum) strength and corresponding failure displacement of the models. These results were then compared with the measured experimental results. It was found that the predictions from the FE models agreed well with the measured results.
