Friction coupled interfaces closed under pressure are considered as a possible source of nonlinearity for the case of incident shear waves polarized horizontal to the surface. The model makes use of static and kinetic coefficients of friction to calculate the time dependent boundary conditions. The modulation of a general shear wave normally incident on such an interface is found, and this, in turn, is used to calculate the distortion of the wave profile of an incident harmonic shear wave. The amplitudes of the higher order harmonics are then found by Fourier transformation. Surprisingly, it is found that no even harmonics are produced by this process. This form of nonlinearity may prove be useful in locating and diagnosing microcracks and measuring friction coefficients or surface conditions of some materials.
