Abstract
Dans cet article, le multiculturalisme est envisagé sociologiquement à travers les conflits suscités par les demandes d'accommodement raisonnables à l'école et d'aménagement de lieux de cultes dans la ville. Ces conflits et les relations qui se tissent entre les protagonistes éclairent les dynamiques sociales à l'œuvre dans le contexte multiculturaliste canadien. Le conflit y apparaît comme un construit social nécessaire qui, parce qu'il tente d'être collectivement maîtrisé, assure paradoxalement une expérience pleinement démocratique aux individus et aux groupes concernés mais aussi à l'ensemble de la société. Ces conflits transforment les rapports sociaux et contribuent à une socialisation réciproque des individus et des groupes, redéfinissant, pour les uns et les autres, leur statut majoritaire ou minoritaire, leurs citoyennetés respectives.
