Abstract

This chapter covers the business and technology issues related to cable companies offering telephony. First the market is identified and then a review is given of DOCSIS, Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, which is used to transport VoIP over cable. The functionality of the elements in the distributed architecture is indicated, including the media terminal adapter and servers. Extensions to RSVP are described that prevent fraudulent use of the network and the interworking between RSVP at the edge and DiffServ in the backbone is described.
