Wittgenstein wrote that “to imagine a language means to imagine a form of life.” In this article the “form of life” to be addressed is contemporary organization. Normal language‐learning starts from the lived experience and the role of language in it rather than from mastering a grammar first and then applying it, like in second language courses. Similarly, organizations are first experienced as conversations, and only subsequently translated into textual models or formal organizational theory. Organization, it is proposed, emerges in the interplay of conversation and textual representations of it, as both preceding and following the interaction. In what follows, the organizational implications of seeing communication practice as primary and textual representations of it as secondary are explored.
