An effective and compliant stability program consists of a number of essential elements to ensure that drug products developed for human use are safe, efficacious, and will meet a certain standard of quality, i.e. remain within its approved shelf life specification, when exposed to various storage conditions. Environmental chambers are used to establish an appropriate storage condition and expiry date for the drug product and thus is a critical component of the drug product development process. To ensure that an environmental chamber is suitable for this purpose, it is validated for use following a predefined qualification protocol that includes an installation qualification (IQ), operation qualification (OQ), and performance qualification (PQ) along with predetermined acceptance criteria for successful qualification. This chapter describes the steps required to qualify an environmental chamber for routine use in a stability program.
