Abstract

Un ensemble de faits géomorphologiques et sédimentologiques (fabriques de till à orientation d’écoulement vers le S; position sur des versants exposés au N et tracé de formes glaciaires frontales; orientation et situation de système interlobaire) indique un écoulement général vers le S d’une masse glaciaire à l’E et au NE de Sherbrooke. La limite occidentale de celle-ci paraît se prolonger au N de la moraine d’interlobe des monts Stoke par les eskers de Saint-Claude. L’origine de cette masse glaciaire n’est pas reconnaissabie dans la région considérée, mais pourrait se situer dans le plateau appaiachien de Thetford-Mines. Cette masse, en conflit avec sa voisine occidentale à écoulement général vers le SE, a vu son influence croître durant les étapes ultimes de la déglaciation, en particulier lors de la récurrence dite de Cherry River dont l’extension au SE de la limite fixée par McDONALD (1967) paraît probable. L’absence de continuité vers le SO et la localisation sur versant des formes frontales s’expliquent par l'existence de lacs de barrage glaciaire dans les vallées principales où les fronts étaient amenés à flotter; l’obliquité des axes du relief, orientés NE-SO par rapport aux fronts assumés plutôt E-O, rend compte du déversement général vers l’O des lacs proglaciaires, soit dans la direction de leur décroissance d’altitude.
