Abstract
Com o presente artigo pretendi reflectir sabre as praticas do Servico Social em Oncologia, com um grupo especifico de doentes jovens e suas familias, sujeitos a um processo de doenca ameacador, que em mais de 50% dos casos conduz a morte a curta prazo. Condicionados a partida por esta dura realidade, OS profissionais, e, nomeadamente os assistentes sociais, podem deixar que insidiosamente o espectro da morte afecte a sua relacao com estes jovens e suas familias, acabando por ser coniventes num processo de morte social prematura. A outra alternativa que tem de ser construida diariamente, consiste num acompanhamento que aposte na criacao de condicoes (materiais, sociais e politico / ideologicas) para que estes jovens e suas familias continuem a viver e a desenvolver-se como seres humanos, apesar do sofrimento e da ameaca permanente da morte.
