Abstract
Largement diffusé, le best-seller participe à la diffusion des stéréotypes sociaux et constitue à ce titre une source pour l’historien. En France, les années 1980 se caractérisent par la dérégulation du système bancaire et par la valorisation de l’argent. L’homme d’affaires Paul-Loup Sulitzer se lance dans l’écriture d’une saga qui connaît un immense succès populaire. Chacun de ses romans fait de la réussite financière une aventure, une quête, un idéal. Cependant, pour des raisons qui tiennent en partie au statut de l’écrivain dans la culture française, il se trouve exclu des réseaux littéraires classiques. À la charnière du 21e siècle, la médiatisation des « traders » relance l’intérêt des éditeurs pour une littérature didactique inspirée par la finance. De nouveaux auteurs capables de réinvestir une connaissance éprouvée dans le domaine économique, sont publiés et contribuent ainsi à la diffusion des idées libérales. En même temps, la crise et les scandales bancaires ouvrent la voie à des fictions critiques qui montrent combien la littérature reste une arme de combat.
