Abstract
Radiesse consists of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres in an aqueous carboxymethyl cellulose gel carrier. It is injected through a 27 gauge needle into the subdermal space or even above the periosteum. After injection, the gel carrier is absorbed and the microspheres act as a scaffold for new tissue formation inducing a fibroblastic response which improves volume deficits in excess of one year. The main uses for Radiesse have been volume loss correction due to intrinsic aging, particularly in the cheek/chin area and also in HIV associated facial lipoatrophy. Radiesse has also proven useful for nasal contouring. Radiesse appears to be very safe with few significant adverse events other than those expected from injecting a material of this kind into the subdermal space such as pain, swelling, bruising
