Abstract
Le savoir démographique est devenu un lieu de questionnement et d'investigation. À l'instar de chercheurs d'autres disciplines, les démographes s'interrogent sur les usages et les effets sociaux du savoir qu'ils produisent. Cependant, si l'on s'inquiète de l'utilisation que font les milieux politico-administratifs des connaissances démographiques — et des effets pervers qui peuvent en découler —, les différents « objets » auxquels font eux-mêmes appel les démographes dans leur travail ne semblent pas avoir suscité le même intérêt. À travers une analyse de travaux de recherche qui ont défendu la thèse de l'existence d'un « système africain » régissant les comportements procréateurs et sexuels, cet article cherche à attirer l'attention sur le caractère hybride du savoir démographique et sur les différents enjeux qui entourent la construction d'une « Afrique distincte ».
