Plusieurs chercheurs se sont intéressés aux liens génériques unissant l’histoire tragique et la tragédie aux xvi e et xvii e siècles. Si ces études ont souligné la présence, dans les histoires tragiques, de certains procédés de théâtralisation créateurs de pathétisme, ce parallèle établi entre histoire tragique et tragédie ne s’est effectué qu’à partir d’une définition théorique ou empirique de cette dernière. Cet article met en regard les deux genres à partir de deux textes emblématiques : l’histoire IX du recueil des Histoires mémorables et tragiques de François de Rosset (1619) et la tragédie Hippolyte de Robert Garnier (1573). Cet examen révèle des similitudes dramaturgiques sur le plan du choix des sujets tragiques, de la fonction donnée à la voix « chorale », de la rhétorique des récits du narrateur-messager et de la portée expressive des discours de lamentation des protagonistes.
