The chapter opens with the presentation of the generic queueing model. We then proceed to a proof and applications of a fundamental relation in queuing theory-Little's formula. This is followed by a discussion of the Poisson process, which is a fundamental process in elementary queuing theory. As part of the discussion it is demonstrated that Poisson arrivals see time averages (PASTA), which is fundamental to the application of the theory to real-life systems. The discussion moves from the Poisson process, which is pure birth process to birth and death processes, which model basic queuing systems. The method of stages is introduced as a way to generalize the service time distribution from the exponential to an arbitrary distribution. The technique is used to show the fundamental result on call blocking probability being insensitive to the probability distribution of the service time.
