Nos últimos anos tem crescido a consciência de que a vida do homem na terra depende de vários processos biológicos chave, mediados pela biodiversidade. Além dos bens de uso direto, como alimento, madeira, roupas, fármacos e bicombustíveis, a biodiversidade provê uma fonte inesgotável de inovações. Dada a complexidade e a dinâmica desses "serviços" da biodiversidade, a completa substituição por vias artificiais é praticamente impossível. Assim, deve-se procurar entender o papel funcional da biodiversidade e desenvolver mecanismos que visem o seu uso sustentado e conservação. Recentemente pesquisadores canadenses e brasileiros têm desenvolvido parcerias bem sucedidas que aliam a vocação natural do Brasil e o know how canadense pra o uso e manejo da biodiversidade nos sistemas tropicais. Nesse artigo destacaremos algunsestudos de caso realizados no Brasil, na Argentina e no Canadá sobre o uso e manejo da biodiversidade. Bem como, apresentaremos novas possibilidades de interação entre Brasil e Canadá nessa área do conhecimento.Abstract: The past years have witnessed an increasing awareness of the fact that human life on Earth depends on several key biological processes mediated by biodiversity. In addition to direct consuming goods, such as food, wood, clothing, pharmaceuticals and biofuel, biodiversity provides an endless source of innovations. Given the complexity and dynamics of those "services", the full substitution through artificial means is nearly impossible. Thus, one must try to understand the functional role of biodiversity, and develop mechanisms aiming at sustainable use and conservation. Canadian and Brazilian researchers have recently developed successful partnerships which bring together the Brazilian natural trend and the Canadian know-how in the use and management of biodiversity in the tropical systems. This article will bring up some case studies that have taken place in Brazil, Argentina and Canada on the use and management of biodiversity. We shall present as well new possibilities of interaction between Brazil and Canada in this area of knowledge.
