Abstract
La douleur chronique est reconnue pour être un important problème de santé publique, malgré que son épidémiologie demeure limitée. La présente étude s’intéresse aux différences entre les hommes et les femmes dans la prévalence de la douleur chronique au Canada et à la perception de la santé qu’ont les personnes atteintes. Pour ce faire, nous avons utilisé les données publiques de l’Enquête sur la Santé des Communautés Canadiennes (ESCC) — cycle 3.1 (2006). Parmi 132 221 répondants, 40 % ont rapporté de la douleur chronique (arthrite ou rhumatisme, lombalgie chronique, fibromyalgie, migraine, syndrome du côlon irritable). Les maladies associées à de la douleur chronique sont prédominantes chez les femmes et les personnes agées. Parmi les personnes atteintes de douleur chronique, les femmes perçoivent leur santé comme étant meilleure en comparaison aux évaluations des hommes. La douleur chronique est un problème majeur dans la communauté canadienne et les femmes âgées sont davantage atteintes.
